Images on Christ Project. John 21:4-6. Artist's comment: "Three weary perplexed disciples decide to go fishing to forget their anxieties and fears. Jesus is dead, what now? But Jesus appears to them, and as he had done before, performed a miracle in need. The catch is so big it almost pulls the boat over. In this painting the viewer feels the moment of disbelief as the net fills instantly. The fish seem to be pulling the boat under, symbolizing a moment of exigency. The viewer is drawn in, as if you were one of the fish. There is frantic excitement in the foreground, giving way to serene peace into the sunrise. A statement about life itself, on one hand this could be a crisis amidst great order and peace, as in Bonnell's painting of The Good Samaritan. Such is the paradox of following the man, Jesus. On the other hand, this is a scene, representing from the top down (heaven down), the order of God the Father in the sun, the life of following Christ in the mast (the cross) and the catch (the miracle of a changed heart)."
